Gregg Williams apparently won’t be the Redskins’ next defensive coordinator.
A day after it was reported the Redskins wanted to land a meeting with Williams, the 60-year-old is finalizing a contract with the New York Jets to become their next defensive coordinator, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
NBC Sports Washington reported Monday that talks between Williams and the Jets had stalled, opening the door for the Redskins.
Jets finalizing deal with former Browns’ interim HC Gregg Williams to become their defensive coordinator, per source. Williams was the defensive coordinator the Jets were targeting no matter who their HC was; they got their man.

Though defensive coordinator Greg Manusky is still under contract, the Redskins have been exploring a possible change — talking to Todd Bowles and Steve Wilks, as well.
Bowles spurred the Redskins to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Wilks agreed to become the defensive coordinator in Cleveland.
Williams most recently coached in Cleveland, where the Browns went 5-3 with him as interim head coach. After the season, Williams was let go when the Browns promoted Freddie Kitchens to become their new head coach.
Williams, of course, was Washington’s former defensive coordinator under Joe Gibbs from 2004-07. At one point, Williams was seen as the favorite to take over from Gibbs, but the team hired Jim Zorn instead.
