Nick Foles has now played in two straight postseasons for the Philadelphia Eagles, including their run to Super Bowl LII last year, but as far as the team’s decision-makers are concerned, he’s still the backup.
Eagles coach Doug Pederson and top front office executive Howie Roseman reaffirmed in a press conference Tuesday that Carson Wentz will be their starting quarterback when he is healthy, but that they would welcome Foles back in 2019 if they could.
“We would love to keep Nick Foles,” said Roseman, the executive vice president of football operations. “You talk about a guy we drafted here and we’ve grown incredibly close with. I don’t know a team that wouldn’t want to have Nick Foles on their roster. Certainly, as we go into the substance of those discussions, we haven’t had them yet, but there’s no question we love having Nick Foles as an Eagle in Philadelphia and we’d love to keep him.”
Foles’ contract with Philadelphia has a team option for 2019 that includes a “player void,” essentially making it a mutual option. Either party can decide to move on from the other. The Eagles may try to tag-and-trade Foles, among other options.
Foles is expected to be an enticing option for other NFL teams looking for a starting quarterback this option.
“In Nick’s case, listen, we’d love to have everybody back throughout the roster, but as I’ve said many times, it’s not about one guy, it’s about the team, and we’re going to do what’s best for the team,” Pederson said.
