President Trump praised Volkswagen on Tuesday for choosing to create a new production base in Tennessee.
“Volkswagen will be spending 800 million dollars in Chattanooga, Tennessee. They will be making Electric Cars,” Mr. Trump tweeted. “Congratulations to Chattanooga and Tennessee on a job well done. A big win!”
The car company made the announcement to move operations to Tennessee, which would bring 1,000 jobs to the area just at the production plant. More jobs would be available at suppliers.
Volkswagen said the new plant will focus on producing electric vehicles, and operations should begin by 2022.
“The US is one of the most important locations for us and producing electric cars in Chattanooga is a key part of our growth strategy in North America,” Volkswagen CEO Dr. Herbert Diess said in a statement.
“Projects like the electric car production announced today and changes in our sourcing decisions are in line with the current direction of trade policy including the USMCA,” he added.
