TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Authorities are investigating how an undercover Florida sheriff’s deputy struck and killed a teenager who was attempting to cross the street in Tampa.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputy driving an unmarked sedan swerved to miss one teenager walking a bike across the street but wound up hitting a second one. The boys were best friends.

Investigators have released few details about the Friday incident, including the names of those involved. But family members identified the dead teenager as 15-year-old Josiah Pinner, a middle school student.

Authorities say investigators were working to analyze data on the car’s computer to determine the undercover deputy’s speed at the time of the crash.
