ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - A policy change that requires vendors to give the Naval Academy a 20 percent commission for jobs done on campus is receiving scrutiny.
The Capital reports its questions about the policy led the school to announce it will review the policy this week, while two members of Congress on the academy’s Board of Visitors say they plan to seek more information about the change.
Businesses were required to sign contracts effective Oct. 1 that give over a portion of commissions. The academy says their cut is intended to control retail, raise revenue for the Business Services Division and bolster the fund that pays for midshipmen recreational activities.
The contract bars businesses from raising prices to offset the cost of the fee, and the newspaper reports it disproportionately affects wedding vendors.
