The majority of Americans blame President Trump and the GOP for the partial government shutdown, which is now the longest in U.S. history, according to a new poll released Sunday.

Data from the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll showed that 53 percent of Americans surveyed hold Republicans and the president responsible for the shutdown stalemate, with only 29 percent feeling the same about the Democrats.

Blame mostly fell along party lines, with 85 percent of Democrats and 68 percent of Republicans faulting the other party. However, more Republicans — 15 percent — blamed their own party leaders than Democrats did.

This survey found that only 24 percent said the situation at the border constitutes a crisis, but nearly half said it is a serious problem.

As negotiations have repeatedly broken down over the past 24 days, Mr. Trump has considered bypassing Congress by declaring a national crisis and using emergency powers to build the wall. The survey found that 66 percent of Americans oppose the president going that far.

The poll surveyed 788 adults in the U.S. via phone from Jan. 8-11. It has a margin of error of 4.5 percentage points.
