RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The top budget-writer in the North Carolina House for the past six years will stick around the Legislative Building despite his defeat in November because he’s been hired by Speaker Tim Moore.

Moore’s office announced that Republican Nelson Dollar of Cary joined his staff Monday as a senior policy adviser, making about $117,500 annually.

Dollar served seven terms in the House, rising to the post of senior chairman of the House Appropriations Committee in 2013. He lost his Wake County seat to Democrat Julie von Haefen in the fall.

It’s unclear the topics that he’ll be advising Moore about, but Moore spokesman Joseph Kyzer praised Dollar for creating budgets that led to revenue surpluses and record reserves in the state’s savings fund.
