President Trump on Monday accused Democrats of being AWOL from shutdown negotiations, as the government remained shuttered for the 24th day.

The president said he was still waiting for a counteroffer from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer.

I’ve been waiting all weekend. Democrats must get to work now. Border must be secured!” Mr. Trump said in a series of tweets. “Nancy and Cryin’ Chuck can end the Shutdown in 15 minutes. At this point it has become their, and the Democrats, fault!”

The White House and Democrat leaders did not have shutdown talks on the schedule Monday.

The government shutdown is now the longest in modern U.S. history.

Last month, Mr. Trump said he would be “proud” to take responsibility for shutting down the government in the name of national security.

The two sides remain deadlocked. Mr. Trump won’t back off his demand for $5.7 billion for a fence on the U.S.-Mexico border and Democrats remain steadfastly opposed to his “border wall.”

Mrs. Pelosi has called his plan for a wall or fence “immoral.”
