The progressive liberal group that helped launch Rep. Alexandria Ocascio-Cortez’s congressional career announced Friday that it is recruiting candidates to unseat Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas in the Democratic primary in 2020.

Justice Democrats, who also backed liberal candidates across the country, including Rep. Ayanna Pressley in Massachusetts and Rep. Rashida Tlaib in Michigan, said Mr. Cuellar is a “fake Democrat” and criticized him for voting with President Trump nearly 69 percent of the time in the last Congress.

“In the last election cycle, Justice Democrats revealed enormous energy in the Democratic Party primary electorate for change when Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ayanna Pressley upset long-time incumbent Democrats who had grown out-of-touch with their deep blue districts,” said Alexandra Rojas, executive director of the group. “We’re now leading a grassroots candidate recruitment effort to find a real Democrat to run against Cuellar.”

The group said Mr. Cuellar is weak on gun control, abortion rights and immigration.
