CARROLLTON, Ga. (AP) - A Georgia police officer has resigned after video surfaced of a suspect being punched in the face during an arrest.

A statement issued by the Carrollton Police Department says Cpl. C.J. Meeks quit following a videotaped confrontation that occurred outside a fast-food restaurant on Tuesday.

Cellphone video recorded by a bystander showed officers talking with 20-year-old Amor Ellison outside a Zaxby’s restaurant where he recently lost his job. The discussion escalates, and an officer is shown punching the man in the face during an arrest attempt.

Carrollton Police Chief Joel Richards says in a statement issued Thursday that the officer resigned the department while the incident was being investigated.

Ellison told news outlets he was hit twice, once when he had his hands behind his back.
