President Trump hinted Friday morning about making reforms to the H-1B.

“H1-B holders in the United States can rest assured that changes are soon coming which will bring both simplicity and certainty to your stay, including a potential path to citizenship,” the president tweeted. “We want to encourage talented and highly skilled people to pursue career options in the U.S.”

H-1B visas are designed to bring in foreign workers, especially ones with specialized knowledge of their field. It’s particularly sought for positions in tech and science fields.

The visas are capped by law at 85,000 per year, though the demand usually far outweighs the available slots. So the government awards visas via lottery.

Previous changes the administration made in 2018 to the H-1B application process favor applications with advanced degrees.

The president’s tweet was unclear about what changes may be ahead for the H-1B holders, or how he will proceed with the reforms.
