Fox News host Tucker Carlson recently used his platform to rail against market capitalism, claiming that “families are being crushed by market forces.” While poverty certainly exists among American families, it is absurd to attribute it to markets.

Our economic system didn’t create poverty. Abject poverty is the default for humankind, and our system has sought to remedy that by maximizing the individual’s economic freedom. Mr. Carlson went on to say, “We do not exist to serve markets.” The insinuation here is that markets are some shady, abstract force outside our control, when in reality markets are what give us control through supply and demand.

While some conservatives have been quick to defend Mr. Carlson, they should see that his criticisms of capitalism are rooted in myth and misinformation.
