WARREN, Ohio (AP) - Two Ohio lawmakers say they’ll give away their pay increases enacted under legislation they supported that also increased death benefits for survivors of fallen emergency responders.
Democratic state Reps. Glenn Holmes of Girard and Michael O’Brien of Warren tell the Warren Tribune Chronicle they supported the bill because of the death benefits issue, not the raise.
The base salary for most Ohio lawmakers increases by roughly $2,400 to about $63,000 in 2019, then rises annually through 2028.
O’Brien and Holmes say it’s improper to accept a raise amid financial hardship in their home area, which is reeling from the planned idling of the General Motors plant in Lordstown.
Holmes says he’ll give his raise to local job training and retraining efforts. O’Brien says his will go to a church.
