PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A new research vessel for oceanographers in New England has been named the RV Resolution.

Rhode Island Democratic U.S. Sen. Jack Reed says the Resolution will replace RV Endeavor, a research vessel operated by the University of Rhode Island. The Endeavor is more than 40 years old.

URI, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts and the University of New Hampshire formed the East Coast Oceanographic Consortium to apply for one of three new research vessels awarded nationwide.

The National Science Foundation selected the group. The $100 million vessel will be delivered to URI’s Graduate School of Oceanography in 2021.

Reed says the graduate school selected the name Resolution, which the foundation approved, as a nod to the second vessel used by 18th century explorer Capt. James Cook.
