House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler on Friday blasted acting Attorney General Matthew G. Whitaker for ignoring the advice of the Justice Department’s ethics attorneys and not recusing himself from special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation.
The Justice Department’s ethics office told Mr. Whitaker, upon taking the helm, that he should recuse himself from the special counsel probe because of public comments he made slamming the investigation on CNN.
Mr. Whitaker chose to ignore the advice and continue to oversee the Mueller probe.
“In my view, your conduct to ignore ethics advice falls well short of the mark,” said Mr. Nadler, New York Democrat.
Mr. Nadler said the ethics office decision was “an act of bravery.”
