PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo’s bid to raise the state’s minimum wage is facing pushback from a state business group.
The Senate Finance Committee held a hearing Thursday night on the Democratic governor’s bid to raise the minimum wage from $10.50 to $11.10 an hour on Jan. 1, 2020. The Providence Journal reports the National Federation of Independent Business released a statement prior to the hearing that argued a wage hike would hurt small business.
The NFIB describes itself as “the nation’s largest advocacy organization representing small and independent businesses.”
During the 2018 election cycle, Rhode Island unions called for raising the minimum wage to $11.50 an hour in 2020 and inching up to eventually reach $15 an hour.
