The Democratic Party’s leadership in Virginia is a mess, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday it doesn’t taint the party’s prospects at the national level.
“No, it does not,” she told reporters.
She said Virginia “will resolve” its own issues, and said it was “sad” the party was suffering because it had “some very talented leaders.” She did not say who she meant.
The state’s governor and attorney general have admitted this month that they darkened their faces, in what most would term donning blackface, back in the 1980s.
Meanwhile, the lieutenant governor has been accused of raping a woman at the 2004 Democratic National Convention.
Calls for resignations have come in from all quarters, but a total decapitation of the state’s elected leadership is unprecedented.

All 140 seats in the state General Assembly are up for election in November, and the prospect of having a tainted troika leading candidates into the campaign is scary to many Democrats.
But Mrs. Pelosi, the country’s highest-ranking Democrat, said she wouldn’t get intervene.
“I have enough to do here without getting involved in the affairs of Virginia,” she said.
