PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Central Maine Power is proposing $258 million in incentives over 40 years to win support for a 145-mile transmission line across the wilderness of western Maine.
The Portland Press Herald reports that confidential documents indicate electric customers would get $140 million to reduce their bills and that low-income customers would receive an additional $50 million over the time period. The deal also includes $15 million to upgrade fiber optic broadband, $15 million for energy-efficient heat pumps, and $5 million for host communities.
The utility offered the sweetened deal when it reopened negotiations on the $1 billion New England Clean Energy Connect. Much of the project calls for widening existing corridors, but a new swath would have to be cut through a 50-mile segment of wilderness.
