NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island city and the highest-ranking woman on the city’s police force have reached a $150,000 settlement in a sexual harassment suit.
A lawyer for North Providence tells The Providence Journal that Lt. Diana Perez was awarded a total of $150,000, with $75,000 from the town itself and $75,000 from its insurer.
Edward Roy, Perez’s lawyer, called it a “reasonable and fair settlement” and says his client is happy to put the case behind her.
Perez sued the department in 2016, alleging she was subjected to “inappropriate, discriminatory and vulgar” comments from several high ranking officers, including an acting chief.
Perez took medical leave for high blood pressure and anxiety stemming from what she called a “hostile, humiliating, and shaming work environment.”
She has since returned to work.
