SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A proposed amendment that would replace much of the gender-specific terminology in the Utah Constitution has moved through a state Senate panel.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports members of the state Senate Government Operations and Political Subdivisions Committee voted unanimously Tuesday to advance the measure to the full Senate.
The measure would swap out the use of male pronouns with “person” and replace uses of “husband” and “wife” with “spouse.”
Republican state Sen. Deidre Henderson, the measure’s sponsor, says much of the state constitution is already gender-neutral and her measure would create consistency within the document.
The measure requires a two-thirds majority in the House and Senate, as well as a public ratification at the next election in 2020.
