ATHENS, Ala. (AP) - A north Alabama county has agreed to nearly $50,000 in back pay to sheriff’s office workers for uncompensated work.
WAFF-TV reports the Limestone County Commission approved the payment Monday in an agreement with the U.S. Labor Department.
A complaint filed over Sheriff Mike Blakely’s department claimed employees weren’t paid for working an annual sheriff’s rodeo and some courthouse shifts.
A federal investigation showed the department owed money to 126 employees for a roughly two-year period ending last April.
Sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Stephen Young says the office doesn’t think it violated any laws, but agreed to the settlement as the best way to move forward.
Young says the office is now taking steps to ensure that employees know that working at the rodeo is optional.
