PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island College says it will require students in education to be trained in areas where the state currently lacks teachers.
The Providence Journal reports this fall, students who study elementary education at RIC will also be trained to teach one of the following subjects: special education, math or science. Interim co-dean Gerri August says the redesign of the field of study is meant to address the teacher shortage in Rhode Island in those areas.
Although the state doesn’t have a generic teacher shortage, the state does have a shortage in certain subjects - including special education, math, science and English as a Second Language.
The state has also worked to address the issue, and has made it easier for teachers from neighboring states to teach in Rhode Island.
