The chairman of the House Armed Services committee is expressing concerns about President Trump’s State of the Union address Tuesday evening.

Just hours before Mr. Trump will deliver his assessment before Congress, Rep. Adam Smith, Washington Democrat, said he worries “the President will once again prioritize appeasing his base instead of putting the interests of the entire country first.”

The chairman has questioned President Trump’s decision to send active-duty troops to the southern border and expressed opposition to allocating defense funds to build a wall.

Mr. Smith highlighted President Trump’s Oval Office address that discussed the shutdown and called for border wall funding, and claimed it was “riddled with mischaracterizations and lies about immigrants and our border.”

“I hope the president will refrain from his campaign-style rhetoric about immigrants that is rooted in intolerance and racism,” Mr. Smith said in a statement.
