NEW YORK (AP) - The Atlantic 10 Conference men’s basketball tournament will return to Washington in 2022, and be back in Brooklyn in 2023 and ’24, extending a relationship with Barclays Center that started in 2013.
The A-10 announced the future sites Tuesday. The conference tournament returns to Barclays Center this season from March 13-17, the first of a three-year agreement with the arena. It will be the fifth time the A-10 tournament will be held at the home of the NBA’s Nets and NHL’s Islanders.
The A-10 tournament was played at Barclays from 2013-16, before striking a deal with the arena and the Atlantic Coast Conference to relocate for two years. The Atlantic 10 played in Pittsburgh in 2017 and at Capital One Arena in the nation’s capital in 2018.
“Hosting the A-10 Championship in the number one and number six media markets in the United States has been fantastic for the conference,” Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade said in a statement. “Both Capital One Arena and Barclays Center are venues our coaches, student-athletes and fans love.”
Both arenas have hosted NCAA Tournament games in recent years.
Barclays has become frequent venue for college basketball, hosting a conference tournament every year (ACC in 2017 and ’18) since its opening in September 2012, as well as frequent regular-season matchups involving ranked teams.
“Since opening Barclays Center, we have consistently brought top college basketball to the borough and we are proud to build on that tradition for years to come,” Barclays Center CEO Brett Yormark said.
The A-10 has 14 members, spanning from Massachusetts to North Carolina and New York City to St. Louis. The league has three teams (VCU, George Mason and Richmond) in Virginia.
“We are thrilled to continue the tradition of hosting exciting postseason collegiate basketball at Capital One Arena and excited to welcome the Atlantic 10 men’s basketball championship back to the nation’s capital in 2022,” said David Touhey, president of venues for Monumental Sports & Entertainment.
