OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Teachers in Oakland, California have voted to authorize a strike if their union can’t reach agreement with the school district.

The Oakland Education Association, which represents about 3,000 teachers, said Monday that 95 percent of voting members supported the strike.

No strike date has been set as both sides are waiting for the results of a fact-finding report from the Public Employment Relations Board expected by Feb. 15.

Oakland teachers are seeking a 12 percent raise over three years as well as smaller class sizes, but the district faces a $30 million deficit and has offered five percent.

The 50,000-student district is one of several nationwide where teachers have seen teacher activism grow after Los Angeles teachers reached a deal following their six-day strike last month.
