INDIANAPOLIS — When the Washington Redskins add a quarterback this spring, it will be done with the intention of creating competition for veteran Colt McCoy.
Both coach Jay Gruden and senior vice president of player personnel Doug Williams said Thursday the Redskins will add another arm this spring in order to compete for the starting job.
The Redskins have the 15th overall pick, but could also look to bring in a quarterback via free agency.
Last year’s starter, Alex Smith, is still recovering from a serious leg injury and the team has said it doesn’t know if Smith will play in 2019.
“Always looking for competition, for sure,” Gruden said. “You know Colt had an opportunity when Alex went down. Unfortunately, he got hurt. But everybody knows everyone in the organization feels good about Colt if he’s the starter. But competition is very good, especially at the quarterback situation.”
Added Williams: “At the end of the day, we’re going to try to play the best guy.”
McCoy started two games last season before suffering a season-ending broken leg against the Philadelphia Eagles.
