JAMESTOWN, Va. (AP) - A power line project that drew criticism from preservationists and environmentalists has been completed in a historic area of Virginia.
The Daily Press reported Wednesday that Dominion Energy is now sending 500,000 volts of electricity across the James River near Jamestown Island. The land south of Richmond is the site of England’s first permanent settlement.
Preservation groups sued to stop the project in federal court. They claimed power-line towers rising as high as 295 feet would harm the historic view. Environmental groups also raised concerns about spawning grounds for Atlantic sturgeon, an endangered fish.
Dominion said the project is crucial to providing reliable service to 600,000 people as well as to a nearby theme park and military base. Dominion paid $90 million to local groups to blunt to project’s impact.
