FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (AP) - Framingham State University in Massachusetts has announced that U.S. Rep. and civil rights leader John Lewis has agreed to deliver the school’s commencement address this spring.
Framingham State President F. Javier Cevallos in a statement Wednesday said Lewis is a “true inspiration to our students, faculty and staff,” and “I can think of no one else more qualified to show our graduates what it means to live a life that is dedicated to doing good for others.”
Lewis, inspired by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., became involved in the civil rights movement in the 1960s.
The Democrat from Georgia has served in Congress since 1986.
Lewis will receive an honorary doctor of public service degree at the May 26 undergraduate ceremony at the DCU Center in Worcester.
