SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Julian Castro stopped off in Utah as part of his vow to visit all 50 states as he tries separate himself from the crowded field of Democratic candidates for the 2020 presidential election.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports the former San Antonio mayor and former Housing and Urban Development secretary spoke Wednesday to high school-age Latino leaders at the University of Utah.
The 44-year-old outlined his plans if he becomes president, including prekindergarten for all children, tuition-free higher education and Medicare for all.
Castro, the only Latino candidate, criticized the administration’s approach to border security, saying President Donald Trump wants people to believe that they must make the “false choice between border security and being compassionate and humane.”
Castro also appeared at a fundraiser for the state Hispanic Democratic Caucus.
