SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The Utah Senate has narrowly approved a call for a new Constitutional convention of U.S. states.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports the Wednesday vote sends the measure to the House.

Republican sponsor Sen. Evan Vickers says a convention could help rein in what he sees as federal overreach. He’s facing opposition from both sides, with Democrats and Republicans both calling the idea dangerous.

Vickers gave a nod to the critics by fashioning a hat and cape out of the many messages left by constituents on blue paper.

Calling such a convention would require two-thirds of all U.S. states to approve similar resolutions. Vickers says 12 have so far issued similar calls.

Supporters say majorities of states would be required to make changes to the Constitution, so it’s unlikely a convention would approve radical ideas.
