Animal-rights activist group PETA sent a letter Tuesday to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez asking for her to promote more vegan food policies.
In the letter, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals asked Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, New York Democrat, to help limit the nation’s dependence on an animal food supply to help preserve the environment and make Americans healthier.
“Because animal agriculture not only is devastating to animals but also poisons the environment and makes Americans sick, what we need is a Vegan Green New Deal,” PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said in a statement. “PETA hopes Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will promote equity, environmental justice, health, and kindness by recognizing the need for vegan food policies.”
Ms. Newkirk said the animal-byproduct industries spent “millions” on lobbying the government and praised Ms. Ocasio-Cortez for pushing for a Green New Deal.
Ms. Ocasio-Cortez hasn’t responded to the letter.
The congresswoman released the Green New Deal resolution that outlines a sweeping overhaul of the economy and energy sector laden with ambitious social-justice goals.
PETA has recently come under fire for controversial tweets in recent weeks, including saying it sends “condolences to our old nemesis’s loved ones” following German fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld death and criticizing the late animal conservationist Steve Irwin’s legacy on the anniversary of his death.
