President Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen said Wednesday his personal attorney, longtime Clinton confidant Lanny Davis, is representing him for free.
Rep. Jody Hice, Georgia Republican, asked Cohen if liberal activist Tom Steyer is paying Mr. Davis to represent him.
When Cohen said he wasn’t, Mr. Hice then asked who is paying for Mr. Davis.
“At the moment, no one,” Cohen responded.
Mr. Hice incredulously asked Cohen if Mr. Davis was working for nothing.
When Mr. Cohen responded that was correct, he was interrupted by Rep. Jim Jordan, Ohio Republican, who asked if he would eventually pay Mr. Davis back.
Cohen said he would pay him back when he starts earning income, likely after his three-year prison sentence is up.
“That’s a first,” Mr. Jordan said. “I’ve never known a lawyer to wait three years to get paid.”
Cohen replied that Mr. Davis believes his work is “important.”
Once Trump’s loyal attorney and fixer, Cohen has turned on his former boss and cooperated with special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation. He begins his three-year prison sentence in May after he pleaded guilty to lying to Congress in 2017 and committing campaign finance violations while he was working for Mr. Trump.
