President Trump lacks a foreign policy decision-making process and his dealings with the rest of the world are “both sad and dangerous,” former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright says.
Appearing before the House Foreign Affairs Committee Wednesday, the first female head of the U.S. State Department highlighted her disappointment with Mr. Trump’s relations with countries such as Iran, Russia and Syria. It was just the latest sign of how the Democratic takeover of the House is likely to change the tenor of the debate on Capitol Hill.
“The administration’s record is marked by confusion, inconsistency, a lack of diplomacy, and, in some cases, a complete abdication of responsibility,” she said in her prepared opening statement.
Ms. Albright slammed President Trump’s decision to pull out of the International Nuclear Forces treaty with Russia, his prior statements dismissing climate change, and relationships with Saudi Arabia and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Despite her concern, Ms. Albright praised the president for negotiating a trade deal with Canada and Mexico, his efforts towards North Korean denuclearization, and taking a diplomatic approach to the political landscape in Afghanistan.
“All in all, the situation is both sad and dangerous,” she said. “The administration still has time to awaken.”
