SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - A Louisiana mayor has announced plans for a medical corridor that he says will spur economic development and improve access to healthcare within resource-deprived communities.

Shreveport Mayor Adrian Perkins announced Monday the creation of the Shreveport Healthcare and Development Corridor board, which will initially focus on auditing the economic impact of the area’s healthcare industry. The Shreveport Times reports it’ll also look at integrative ways to define healthcare potentials, among other things.

Perkins said he plans for the corridor to be situated from Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport to Willis-Knighton North, but that the boundaries can be expanded.

Ochsner LSU Health CEO Chuck Daigle will serve as the board’s chairman. Daigle says the goal of creating the corridor will be to make Shreveport healthcare “a magnet” for patients, professionals and new technology.
