President Trump’s former personal lawyer and fixer said Wednesday he lied to first lady Melania Trump about Mr. Trump’s alleged affair with adult film star Stormy Daniels.

“He asked me to pay off an adult film star with whom he had an affair and to lie to his wife about it, which I did,” Michael Cohen said during his congressional testimony.

“Lying to the first lady is one of my biggest regrets,” he said. “She is a kind, good person. I respect her greatly — and she did not deserve that.”

Cohen said that he arranged a $130,000 hush payment to Ms. Daniels, a campaign finance violation. It is one of the crimes for which he received a three-year prison sentence last year.

Mr. Trump has denied the affair, but said he was aware of the payment. He also insisted it was legal and that any violation of the law was because Cohen bungled it.
