Moments before he won his first-ever Oscar, director Spike Lee received some news about his hometown New York Knicks at the 91st Academy Awards.
Actor Samuel L. Jackson, presenting for adapted screenplay with Brie Larson, informed Lee, a noted Knicks fans, that New York snapped an 18-game home losing streak Sunday when they beat the San Antonio Spurs — drawing a big laugh from the Hollywood crowd.
“I repeat: The Knicks won tonight,” Jackson said.
Lee took it in stride and appeared to yell back something that all Knicks fans can relate with.
“We’re trying to tank!” Lee yells.
