AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine could become the first state in New England to impose a statewide ban on single-use plastic bags.
The Portland Press Herald reports at least three lawmakers have proposed legislation to ban the bags that environmentalists say harm local wildlife and contribute to pollution.
The move comes after 20 towns and cities in the state have approved bans or fees on plastic bags, and several more are considering local ordinances.
State Rep. Nicole Grohoski says she wants to ban plastic bags in all retail stores, but she would support exemptions on bags used in pharmacies, for produce or meat or for caustic items.
A survey by the Retail Association of Maine shows nearly 65 percent of its members support a ban or fee.
