The New York Yankees are dipping back into their core four.

The Yankees hired longtime starting pitcher Andy Pettitte as a special adviser to general manager Brian Cashman, the team announced Monday.

The announcement came shortly after some transactional news, as the Yankees gave a contract extension to outfielder Aaron Hicks.

It is not clear exactly what the job will entail, but the move clearly pleased Yankees fans on social media. Pettitte pitched two stints for the Yankees totaling 15 seasons, and he ranks first all-time in club history in strikeouts (2,020) and tied for first in games started (438).

He’s the second of the Yankees’ old “core four” to find new work in an MLB front office, after Derek Jeter bought a minority stake in the Miami Marlins and became their CEO.
