BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) - A replica of the Santa Maria - the flagship from Christopher Columbus’ expedition - will soon sail to Georgia for tours.
The St. Marys Tall Ship Alliance is bringing the replica ship to the Brunswick Landing Marina from April 8-15, The Brunswick News reported.
The Nao Santa Maria, built in 2017 in Spain, is making its first visit to the United States, and Brunswick is its only stop in Georgia.
Tours on the Santa Maria will be guided and self-guided, depending on the preference of visitors, said James Crawford, chief operations officer for the tall ship alliance. But he recommends the guided tours.
“Once you are aboard, you can do whatever works for you,” he said.
Most first-time visitors touring a Columbus-era ship will be surprised at how small the vessel was, Crawford said.
After departing Brunswick, the ship will sail to St. Augustine, Florida.
Another tall ship, Privateer Lynx, will sail into the Brunswick Landing Marina shortly after the Nao Santa Maria leaves, and will be in town from April 17-28. Daily public sailings will be offered, as well as free dockside tours and an educational program.
The Lynx is billed as an “interpretation” of a privateer named Lynx that was built in 1812.
The ship is described as a “living museum” created to educate people about American history, the Brunswick newspaper reported.
Crawford said the two vessels are expected to draw large crowds.
“A lot of people from all over Georgia will come to see the ships,” he said.
