Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar made an appearance on the premiere episode of the Showtime comedy series “Desus & Mero” on Thursday night.
The freshmen congresswomen, who all identify as democratic socialists, had a lighthearted conversation with hosts Desus Nice and The Kid Mero about their “radical” reputations and how they have a “beef” with just about everyone on Capitol Hill.
“I think we have a beef with almost everyone here,” Mrs. Omar said, according to a clip flagged by Mediaite. “There’s a lack of courage and it seems like we’re radical, because we deeply care about the people that we represent and we want to throw down for them.”
“Exactly,” Ms. Ocasio-Cortez agreed, “because for once, we’re not just fighting over what is getting done but we’re fighting over how it’s getting done.”
During the segment taped at Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s office, the New York congresswoman also defended Ms. Tlaib for the controversy she sparked last month when he called President Trump a “motherf—er.”
“Rashida got into a little trouble for saying a boo-boo word,” Ms. Ocasio-Cortez said on the show. “So I hit up Rashida, I sent her a text and was like, ’Don’t worry about it. Like, who cares?’ And she was like, ’Yeah, I mean I’m from Detroit. Like, back there, that’s just what we call ’guy.’”
“No, it’s honest,” Ms. Tlaib added. “That’s saying ’that guy.’”
“The double standard in that is that, ’that guy’ never gets in trouble for all of the boo-boo words he uses,” Mrs. Omar chimed in.
Ms. Ocasio-Cortez agreed, saying, “Well, I think it’s one of those things where it’s like, keeping it real with people is like this frowned-upon thing and so we’re just doing it anyway because it’s too much work, it’s too much work to not do that.”
