ALFRED, Maine (AP) - Maine county commissioners have approved extending an agreement to transfer inmates to another county jail due to a shortage of corrections officers.
The Journal Tribune reports York County Commissioners voted unanimously Wednesday to extend their contract with Cumberland County through the end of the year, with an “out clause” of 90 days.
The initial agreement approved in November allowed York County Jail to transfer up to 35 inmates to Cumberland County.
York County Jail currently has 34 corrections vacancies, up from 14 in November.
Jail Administrator Michael Vitiello says the county has seen a lot of applications, but it has produced fewer hires than expected.
The cost to board inmates at Cumberland County is $65 per inmate per day.
Vitiello says they expect the boarding rate to stay the same.
