President Trump said Wednesday that he expects to hold more meetings with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un after next week’s denuclearization summit, which he predicted will be “very successful.”
“I think we’ll accomplish a lot,” Mr. Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “I don’t think this will be the last meeting, by any chance.”
The president will meet with Mr. Kim in Vietnam on Feb. 27-28, to follow up on their historic summit last summer in Singapore. The U.S. is seeking clear signs that Mr. Kim is willing to dismantle his nuclear and missile arsenals.
“I think they want to do something,” Mr. Trump said of the North Koreans. “The sanctions are on in full. I’d love to be able to [ease sanctions]. We have to do something that’s meaningful on the other side.”
He said North Korea has the chance to become “an economic power” situated close to Russia, China and South Korea.
“They have a great, great potential as a country,” he said. “We’ve made a lot of progress.”
