ATLANTA (AP) - Auditors say the city of Atlanta spends more on overtime than similar cities around the country.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that auditors say the city paid $58 million to employees in overtime last year, in part because of generous overtime policies and mistakes.
City auditors say some employees were given overtime pay who were ineligible for the extra pay. The Atlanta Police Department accounted for nearly half of the overtime pay. Police officials say the overtime pay was required because of the number of big events held in the city.
Auditors say between 2015 and 2017, the city’s overtime payments outpaced Houston, Dallas, Philadelphia, Miami, Phoenix, and Washington D.C. Atlanta spent nearly 8 percent of its budget on overtime. The other cities averaged less than 5 percent in overtime.
