SOUTH FULTON, Ga. (AP) - The Georgia state Board of Natural Resources has approved the use of $500,000 of emergency funds to help extinguish an unlicensed landfill fire near the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta.

State Environmental Protection Division spokesman Kevin Chambers tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution the board unanimously voted Friday to use Georgia Solid Waste Trust Fund money on the 6-acre (2.4-hectare) fire.

The fire is about 13 miles (21 kilometers) southwest of the airport and has been burning for five months, sending sulfur-scented smoke throughout the area. Authorities say property owner Tandy Ross Bullock already has been jailed twice over the fire and they’ve been fighting with Bullock over the unlicensed landfill since 2007.

The solid waste fund was created to pay for the clearing of tire piles, which are fire hazards.
