WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) - Watkins Glen International is donating land for a 50-megawatt solar energy center to be built at the venerable racetrack in New York’s Finger Lakes region.

Track president Michael Printup announced the plans on Friday. A subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources will own and operate the solar facility, which will be located adjacent to the natural terrain racetrack.

When the project is completed, The Glen will house the largest solar field located at a racetrack in the United States.

Pocono Raceway has a three-megawatt solar farm on three acres that provides the energy needs of the Pennsylvania track and adds electricity to the local power grid.
