GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - The administrator in South Carolina’s largest county gets paid nearly $100,000 more a year than the person who runs the state’s second largest county.

The Greenville News obtained Greenville County Administrator Joe Kernell’s contract in a public records request and found he is paid about $280,000 a year.

The county administrator in Richland County - South Carolina’s second most populous place - makes about $184,000 a year.

Kernell has other perks some administrators don’t get like a contract that automatically renews without a vote from County Council, 38 days of vacation and 10 percent of his salary placed in a retirement account on top of the retirement benefits give to other county employees.

When Kernell was hired in Greenville County in 2004, he made less than $130,000.
