COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster has removed the entire Richland County Election Board after officials failed to count more than 1,000 ballots in the 2018 election.
McMaster’s order Thursday also cites other problems with the board including failing to count 1,100 votes in 2010, lengthy lines after not putting out all voting machines in 2012 and missing vote counting deadlines in 2016.
The Election Board met Wednesday and members shouted at each other and the public. Voter Registration Director Rokey Suleman recently resigned.
State law allows the governor to remove members of the board due to incapacity, misconduct or neglect in duty. McMaster said in a statement all board members must go to restore confidence with voters.
The Richland County legislative delegation can name new members to the board.
