Since 2006, the NFL has begun its schedule with the defending champions playing on opening night. But that could change this year.
According to the Sports Business Journal, the league is “leaning toward” having the Chicago Bears play the Green Bay Packers to kick-off the season on Thursday, Sept. 5.
Next fall will be the NFL’s 100th season, so the league wants its first game to feature a historic rivalry, per the report.
The New England Patriots, who won the Super Bowl last week, will likely appear on “Sunday Night Football” instead.
