SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Gov. Brian Kemp says he opposes oil drilling off the Georgia coast and he’s willing to “fight for that position” if needed.

Georgia’s new Republican governor told the Savannah Morning News in an interview Thursday that he generally supports offshore drilling, but “I just don’t think we need to be doing it off the coast of Georgia.”

The position puts Kemp at odds with President Donald Trump, who endorsed Kemp for the Republican gubernatorial nomination last year. The Trump administration is preparing permits to allow testing for possible drilling sites off the Atlantic coast.

Kemp said: “I wouldn’t think that they’re going to do something like that if we don’t want it” off Georgia’s coast.

Other East Coast states are suing to try to block seismic testing off their shorelines.
