PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Police have released the name of the officer who shot and killed a man Sunday afternoon outside a coffee shop on Portland’s southeast side.
The Portland Police Bureau said Monday that Officer Justin Raphael shot the man while Officer Daniel Leonard used less lethal force during the incident.
Later Monday police identified the person killed as 51-year-old Koben S. Henriksen.
Police say officers were called to the scene on a report of a man holding a knife in the street. Officers approached the man and shortly thereafter reported that shots were fired, police said. Henriksen died at the scene. Police haven’t said what happened just before officers began firing.
A father and son who work at a nearby food cart, Hicham Elhaj, and Wasim Elhaj, told The Oregonian/OregonLive they saw a person in the middle of Southeast 103rd Drive and that traffic was blocked. Hicham Elhaj said officers pulled up in SUVs, exited the vehicles with guns and that the person started moving swiftly toward the officers.
Hicham said he heard yelling and gunshots and then the man fell to the ground.
The involved officers will remain on paid administrative leave until the Bureau and Multnomah County District Attorney Office’s finish investigating.
The shooting is the fifth fatal one by Portland police officers this year, marking the most fatal police shootings since 2010, when Portland police also killed five people.
